What I've learned...

I've been reading a book recommended from my pediatrician - Taking Charge of ADHD by Russel A Barkely - I recently review my highlights form the book - I am 25% of the way done (I read on my Kindle) and I have 10 pages in highlights. Here are a few of the "Ah-Ha" moments that I have gone through. I know that when I am actively learning and reading I find patients in my understanding of how Preston ticks.

*They do not sense time as well as others, and therefore cannot manage themselves relative to time, deadlines, and the future generally as well as others are able to do. This includes intervals of time as short as 10-20 seconds. Time escapes them, and they are never as able to deal with it as effectively as others of their age group do.

*When all a child focuses on is the moment, acting impulsively makes sense.

*maximizing immediate gratification as much as possible

*ADHD, is a developmental disorder of self-control. It consists of problems with attention span, impulse control, and activity level.

*These problems are reflected in impairment in a child's will or capacity to control her own behavior relative to the passage of time-to keep future goals and consequences in mind.

*Children with ADHD look normal. There is no outward sign that something is physically wrong within their central nervous system or brain.

*ADHD consists of three primary problems in a person's ability to control behavior: difficulties in sustained attention, impulse control or inhibition, and excessive activity.

*ADHD have two additional problems: difficulties following rules and instructions, and excessive variability in their responses to situations

*Those with ADHD will lag behind others in this ability, perhaps by as much as 30% or more. That means that a 10-year-old child with ADHD, for instance, may have the attention span of a 7-year-old child withoutADHD.

*The boys with ADHD, I discovered, played with three times as many toys as the other boys and spent 50% less time playing with each toy.

*Children with ADHD have a lot of trouble waiting for things

*What is most important to understand about children with ADHD is not simply that they move about too much-it is that they behave too much. They are much more likely to respond to the things around them in any situation than are children without ADHD of the same age.

*What those with ADHD have trouble with is not so much that they look away more than those without ADHD (although they do that too); it is that they have much more trouble returning to attend to the task they were doing before their attention was broken.

*When normal children develop emotional self-control, part of what they are doing is internalizing their emotions and keeping them from public display. The emotional reaction exists, but its public display is being restrained.

*ADHD involves a problem in the development and functioning of the frontal area of the brain.

It's just a few highlights.. and I am sure by the time I am done with this book there will be another 40 pages of highlights. But I love this little guy all the same and am so grateful for the learning I am going through.

Bryson get's his Wolf!

Bryson earned his Wolf just in time for the 'Blue and Gold' Banquette - he had a whole year to earn it but was able to get it in just 7 months. He was so excited and was the first out of his pack to get it. So he loved that part. scouts is still very new for me, but I love how excited he is about it and like going.
Pining on the Mothers pin for the wolf
Coming in for a kiss - bit concerned that his mouth is open?
If the audience can't hear the kiss the boy has to give his mother another one. Bryson is so cute about it and I have to turn for a cheek kiss - but I don't mind.
Here is Bryson at the banquette, he is getting so big - it's hard to believe that 9 years old is right around the corner. Good Job Bry!

Black and White

This story was in the first part of the book I am reading - I read it and started crying, someone has put into words how I have been feeling for the past 6 years...

She then explained in detail how her relationship with her son seemed lost, ruined, and possibly even irreparable. This is what she had lost or was in the process of losing: her bond with her first child, the natural reciprocal love between parent and offspring, the foundation on which all of the rest of successful and fulfilling parenting truly depends.

The loss she was describing is so deeply embedded in family life that it is rarely articulated even when it is happening. It is a loss that may be exceeded only by the real loss of a child through death. The relationship she was losing is the dynamic that truly drives all parent-child interactions and all actions by parents on behalf of their families

She could not see what meaningful future lay before her without the love and friendship of her child,

Something is clearly wrong with your child's behavior. He* is losing precious parts of his childhood, and you feel frustrated and confused about what is causing this to happen and what to do about it. Your child is not at peace within the dynamics of your family. There is much daily conflict over chores, homework, relations with siblings, and behavior at school or in the neighborhood.

And more painful than all of this is that you sense-as only a parent can-that your child is not at peace with himself. He is gradually becoming aware that he is not what he wants to be, cannot control as well as others what he knows he should do, cannot make himself into the child he somehow knows you wish he could be. He discourages you, dissatisfies others, and disappoints himself, and at some primitive level of awareness, he has come to know it.

The last 6 years of Preston's sweet life have been such a challenge on me. I have felt so under qualified and impatient for his challenge. I am so grateful now to understand more what he is going through - How much I love him and finally know that we can repair all the damage done.

Valentines Day 2011

We had a wonderful Valentines Day... Darren and I went out the weekend before to dinner and a movie - it was a simple night, nothing spectacular except that we were alone and sometimes - we all the times that is spectacular. On Valentines Day I sent Preston to school with his treats and Bryson had to wait. His teacher was out on a medical leave and asked that the party be held when she returned the end of February. But Bryson seemed to adjust to it well enough. Preston was upset about having to give away all his candy - I told him that he would give 1 to each of his friends and get 18 back... it didn't set in till the party - man was he excited after school about all his candy!

Darren came to my office before going to work and left me these beautiful flowers, balloons (which lasted like 2 weeks) and then some lip candies - so cute. I honestly wasn't expecting this as he just got me flowers on my birthday 2 weeks ago. But, man did I love coming in to see it! I love you Darren, thanks for being my Valentine the last 13 years!

That night I made a Steak dinner - the boys love meat, it's going to get expensive in a few years! We followed up dinner with some yummy V-Day Cupcakes which the boys especially loved! I am so happy to have 4 guys in my life that I get to love and show my love to. I enjoy how differently my love is for each of them and how it's almost customized to their personalities. To my 4 guys - I love you so much!
Bryson's Cupcake Face
Weston - it's better to eat a cupcake with your hands!
Preston - Has mastered the art of eating with his entire face!
Normally we don't do anything for the boys on Valentines day - I decided to change that this year. My thought is that if I show them how much fun getting something is on this day then they'll want to give back on this day as grown men. I am after all raising future husbands and I want them to have a romantic side :) Here is a new Steck tradition...
Bryson opened first - we got him Wii Points to buy a game online
Weston was up next - new Thomas the trains! (We there are still some we don't have)
Preston was the finale - Iron Man mask and Bakugans
I of course had to be Iron Man too - we all took a turn.

Snowmobiling Fun!

For my birthday Darren gave me a 3 day retreat with the kids to Bear River Lodge to go snowmobiling. It was so much fun! The cabins up there are wonderful and make a super fun place to go as a family in winter or summer. We arrive about 3:00 on Thursday and were able to pick up the snowmobiles that night around 4:00 - so we went for a quick ride before dinner. Came back and had a great steak dinner - watched a movie and put the kids to bed. The pull our bed had a horrible mattress so the boys didn't last long on it. Weston was in our bed and Preston was on and off for sleeping. It made for a 'hard' next day. We left Friday for a hope of having a long day of riding and seeing amazing things. Instead we got out for about an hour, Preston started crying and was done. Weston was tired and done. So we headed back. Weston fell asleep on the way back which made driving a challenge. We went back and took a riding rest - we were able to go back out again a bit later on before we had to turn them in. Friday late afternoon we spent sledding with the boys. Saturday morning was spent packing up and getting checked out. Before we left the boys went sledding again for about an hour and then we headed back to Salt Lake.
It was such a nice weekend, fun to get away as a family and do something fun outside. Thanks Babe for setting this up and taking us out!

This is Weston - he is stuck... I went to get him and was up to my thigh in snow
We don't have a big bath tub in our home so naturally this was a novelty and the boys got into it both nights.
On Friday we went riding out for about 2 hours. We stopped for a bit and the boys went down this hill for a bit. It doesn't look very step but they would go for about 30 yards or more.
Bryson after his long hike back up

After our morning ride - Darren went with Bryson for a bit longer and I went back with the younger boys to play in the cabin. Both Preston and Weston didn't want to ride anymore.
Darren grabbed a few great shots of Bryson 'driving' while they were out on their adventure ride
Bryson and Preston in bubbles up to their ears the second night in the tub
WHAT? I'm not doing anything...
Bryson and Preston going down the hill behind the cabins - they had so much fun sledding and didn't want to stop.
Daddy and Weston
My sweet Weston, he was such a trooper with all the bundling we had to do

I love this shot, he was so scared and only went 10 feet down to me waiting to catch him. He is still very unsure about sledding. He even is worried when he goes with Darren or I. But we'll get him liking it soon enough
We found this great hill behind teh cabins - it was nice and long. The boys must have gone down it a couple dozen times. That night was super quiet and full of tired out kids!
Resting after another long climb up the mountain
Preston was having so much fun

Preston, Weston and I coming back up the hill - that was enough exercise for a week.

Weston turns 3!

Looking back the past 3 years have flown by - way to fast. Weston is 3, that is so very hard to believe. Weston celebrated in true Steck style by first waking up to find his room decorated by the birthday fairy with balloons, #3's and Happy Birthday's all around the room. Needless to say he loved that! The rest of the day was pretty usual. That night we took him and the brothers to a birthday dinner at Winger's - we don't normally go out, but this year grandparents didn't come over so we thought we'd go out. We came back home and I made his cake and then we ate it... it was so fast. Then present time. It was such a nice relaxing day with my littlest bug.
I love my Westie to pieces. I am amazed as I think back over the last year I start to think about all the things I would have missed. You see we've been trying to get pregnant for the past year, and no success. With each disappointment I found such joy in watching Weston. I love seeing the world through his eyes - I am sad at what I would have missed had there been a newborn around taking my attention. Everything with Weston is so exciting. The noises, the colors of the world, the objects, everything is just amazing to him. He tells you about it with such enthusiasim, and wants your response to be just as energetic. His language has tripled in the past year and there isn't a word he won't try. I love listening to his cute little voice, even at 3:00 in the morning when he wants to snuggle. His love for his brothers has developed to a friendship - which I love to watch happen. I love watching him get excited about things out the window as we drive in the car. I even love his determined mindset to do everything on his own - even when it's not good for me to wait for him. I love his cute little slim body, his adorable face and his happy uplifting smile.
So to my Weston, thank you for being my positive post to lean on this past year. You are such an amazing easy going little boy, I am so happy to have you as my son. I love you, Happy 3rd Birthday.

Weston asked to call Daddy at work to tell him all about the balloon's, I was surprised at how much he actually talked to him

Here is the attempt - very fast attempt done after dinner to make a Toothless Dragon Cake

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to Weston, Happy Birthday to you.
Blowing out the candles, we had to re-light them so Weston could do it without any help.

TOOTHLESS! He loves How to Train your Dragon so I found this one and he loved it

I love the look on his face in the shoot, he is simply so pleased with his new friend
